Fly Fishing
According to records, Fly Fishing in Slovenia dates back over 100 years; along with the tradition of organised sport fishing. So expect to fish the majority of Slovenia’s rivers, streams and lakes, divided between the Adriatic and Black Sea drainage basins. The top fly fishing river in Slovenia being the Soča, followed by the Sava and their tributaries. Indigenous to the Soča River and a major drawcard for foreign fishermen is the Marble Trout 'Salmo trutta marmoratous'. Growing to an enormous size, it can prove difficult to catch as it lives a reclusive life beneath giant boulders along the rivers length. Whereas many species of fish are artificially stocked in Europe, it is considered rare, however good management that the fish population in Slovenia is self-sustaining. One method of maintaining this is 'catch and release' fishing. This favoured method of fishing utilises articifial flies that do little damage to the fish. Fishermen familiar with the Behm fly might know of its roots in the Soča Valley; also, amongst the world’s first artificial lures - several originated here.
Lake Bohinj is the largest Alpine lake in Slovenia, with a maximum depth of 40m. Fishing here is possible from either the shore of the lake or from a boat; fishing from bridges is not permitted. You are allowed one rod with either one natural or one artificial lure only. Fishing with live bait (fish, shell or bone worm) is not permitted.

The Soča River quite easily takes the lead in the competition for Slovenia's best fishing and most beautiful river. The river is managed by three separate organisations. The Soča also plays home to the only indigenous species of trout in the western river system of Slovenia; the "Marble Trout", a true draw card for many foreign and local fishermen alike. The illusive Marble Trout grows to a healthy size, with the world record trout reaching a sumly 120.7 cm, weighing 25 kg. Just don't expect them to jump on your fly too quickly.
