Named after the shape of the valley, Kanal's history extends back to old times. The town was an important river crossing point across the Soča River, with the first brige being built by the Romans. The current bridge was built after World War I. At about 17m high, there is a yearly diving event off the bridge in mid August.

In a recent article published by Forbes Magazine, Ljubljana has been voted the 5th most idyllic place to live in Europe, described as a “little Paris” with hints of Art Nouveau - a melting pot of culture at the crossroads of the German, Latin and Slavic worlds.
