INTRODUCTION

Hiša Marica (or in English the House of Marica) is a charming small hotel in the wonderful medieval hilltop village of Šmartno in the heart of the enchanting Goriška Brda wine growing region. The house has been fully renovated and offers four exceptionally taseful and attractive rooms / suites sleeping 2-4 people, as well as a vinoteca and shop offering local wines and specialities of the region. The house is named after the grandmother of the current owners - Marica who was known for her fantastic local cooking, and whose memory is done proud by this superb small hotel.

 

LOCATION

The Goriska Brda wine growing region tucked into a hilly enclave overlooking Italian Friuli is one of Slovenia's best kept secrets. Hiša Marica (or Marica's House) is located in one of the region's most attractive villages - Šmartno (or St Martin) - a charming walled medieval hilltop settement much of which has been beautifully restored. The views of the surrounding countryside from Šmartno are wonderful and just a few kilometres away is the "capital" of the Brda - Dobrovo, with is imposing castle. From the Goriska Brda it is an easy day trip to Alps or Adriatic with the Italian Adriatic and the Slovenian Julian Alps each just 40km. The Soca River Valley and Karst wine growing region are two other major attractions in easy reach. Daytrips to Ljubljana, world famous caves at Postiojna and Venice are all easily possible. Specific local attractions also include Sveta gora (15 km) / Franciscan monastery and famous pilgrimage centre. Lipica (88 km; 50 km on the motorway) / world-famous recreation centre and cradle of all Lipizzaner horses in the world. Kobarid (46 km) / Museum of the First World War and a wide range of sporting activities. Bovec (67 km) and the valley of Šoca / Centre of sports tourism in the valley of the Soca. Cormons (17 km) / Lovely little town under the “Monte Quarin” hill , the centre of the Italian part of Collio (italian name for Brda). Gorizia(15 km) / Lovely town with Austrian character, which has grown between the Slav and the Latin world with majestic castle of counts of Gorizia which reins over the city. Cividale (32 km) / An important historical, artistic and cultural monument of Lombard civilisation. Aquileia (44 km) / The famous city of Rome with preserved traces of the patriarchal Basilica and  early Christian floor mosaics, one of the best preserved in the Western world. Palmanova (40 km) / One of the finest examples of Renaissance star-shaped fortress with nine legs, which the Venetian Republic built for defense against the Turks. Vila Manin (65 km) / One of the most important artistic monuments in the Friuli Venezia Giulia, a symbol of tourism and culture of this area. Grado (52 km) / It is well known seaside resort on an island connected by a bridge, with a beautiful town marina, interesting narrow streets in the old town and a nice long walking path along the coast. Trieste (69 km) / An old, romantic costal town with an Austrian character, heritage from the times it used to be the main Austrian port. Castle Miramare (40 km) / Near the town of Trieste. Built for Austrian Archduke Maximilian and his Belgian wife Charlotte of Belgium. Restaurants Outstanding vinoteca on site serving local wines, cheeses and hams. Hot meals can be provided to order. Various other restaurnats in Šmartno or beyond in Dobrovo.
Bars There are some great places to have a drink in Šmartno and every other house in the Brda has a open wine cellar to come and sample the wonderful wines of the region.
